Connecting to the Self With Beauty

This morning a woman in the weights room asked me about a concept in a book I'd lent her that speaks about connecting to the self. She went on to say that in her yoga class they were encouraged to look within which she found useless, and she felt she more connected by looking without (in her mind's eye).

So I told her that one of the easiest ways I had found - in the early stage of my own journey - to connect to the self, to that part of me that is not the flesh and blood that others see when they look at me, was through beauty.

Walking along a shore, or through a forest, or across a field, or wandering along a path in the countryside, or even down a street of an early morning and still-deserted residential area, especially when I could do this in relative silence, I found there was a very rapid connection to the self. I would immerse myself in the beauty of whatever surrounded me, drinking it in to the exclusion of thoughts, or perhaps listening to it: the birds, the insects, the wind through the trees, feeling immense gratitude for its presence in my life at that moment, and very frequently I found tears of joy in my eyes, and a warmth emanating from my heart that filled me with even more joy. And I knew - even in the early stages of this happening - that I had connected to that which I truly am.

The joy inherent in such a connection can only be comprehended by those who have also felt it, but suffice it to say that it goes far beyond the mundane joys of wealth, fame, achievement, honor, and prestige, as marvelous as all those joys can be. The reason is, or so I believe, that this joy - the one that comes from connection to the self - is a remembering; an eternal remembering, even if you couldn't write an essay about the remembering, but a remembering nonetheless, of what you are, where you have come from, and where you will always be. Such a connection to your self brings forth the divine that - as so many have taught over the milennia - we all carry within.

The Power of Your Heart: Loving the Self

My new book: The Power of Your Heart: Loving the Self, is just out. Click here to download an excerpt.

From the Introduction: It is your right to live a life of love. It is your right to understand that loving yourself first is not a selfish way of behavior, but one that allows you to live that life of love. However, it's highly probable that you never got the instruction manual explaining exactly how to accomplish this. Possibly your family - and it may have been a loving family - considered loving the self an act of selfishness. Or perhaps the members of your family simply didn't practice loving the self, and of course, what you didn't see - what was not shown to you - while you were growing up, meant that you just didn't learn how to apply it to yourself. The closer you are able to move towards loving yourself, the closer you will be to living a life of love - quite independently of whether you are in a love relationship or not. A life of love can be lived with or without a partnership, because a life of love implies that you know that it all begins with you by loving the self. The more clearly you understand how to love yourself, the more clearly you will see that it is very hard - if not impossible - to love others in ways that are unrelated to fulfilling any of your needs. Loving yourself first is - for so many of us - one of the hardest things we will ever learn how to do. But know this: the benefits affect you in every particle of your being - body, mind, and soul - and are greater than you will ever be able to imagine.
