Doing a Little Vs Doing a Lot

How do you use your time? What can you accomplish even if you only have small pockets of time available to you?
  • It's nearly the end of your day - your working day - and since there are only 10 minutes left, you decide not to start working on that report you need for the end of the month.
  • Your day is already so full of activities, you truly only have something like 20-30 minutes available, and not necessarily at the same time or place every day, so you decide you simply have no time to write that book.
  • You want to learn Chinese, but there just is no time, other than in your car in traffic and since it's brief and you can't possibly concentrate in the car, you decide not to use that time to learn a little every day.
  • You have read an inspiring book about personal development and want to implement some of its suggestions to make changes in yourself, but decide that since you have you have no real block of time available to you on a daily basis, you will not be able to do it - it's impossible.
  • You want to help in your community, perhaps be a big brother or sister to a young teen who has no parent of your gender, or read in a hospice to the terminally infirm, but because you have so little time available, you do nothing
It's easy to see how we delude ourselves into frittering our lives away and never do so many of the things we want to do. Working on something a tiny bit at a time, or helping in small ways, go a very long way to achieving a worthwhile goal. And imagine how you will feel when you are part of the way there, and can look back to see how far you have already come. And then imagine how you will feel when you are even closer. This is totally up to you - not up to magically available larger pockets of time. History is full of individuals who achieved great things or helped others in great ways, simply by doing a little bit at a time. You can do the same. You simply need to decide to begin! It was Sydney Smith who wrote: It is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only do a little.

The Power of Your Heart: Loving the Self

My new book: The Power of Your Heart: Loving the Self, is just out. Click here to download an excerpt.
Here is a brief excerpt from the Introduction:

It is your right to live a life of love. It is your right to understand that loving yourself first is not a selfish way of behavior, but one that allows you to live that life of love. However, it's highly probable that you never got the instruction manual explaining exactly how to accomplish this. Possibly your family - and it may have been a loving family - considered loving the self an act of selfishness. Or perhaps the members of your family simply didn't practice loving the self, and of course, what you didn't see - what was not shown to you - while you were growing up, meant that you just didn't learn how to apply it to yourself. The closer you are able to move towards loving yourself, the closer you will be to living a life of love - quite independently of whether you are in a love relationship or not. A life of love can be lived with or without a partnership, because a life of love implies that you know that it all begins with you by loving the self. The more clearly you understand how to love yourself, the more clearly you will see that it is very hard - if not impossible - to love others in ways that are unrelated to fulfilling any of your needs. Loving yourself first is - for so many of us - one of the hardest things we will ever learn how to do. But know this: the benefits affect you in every particle of your being - body, mind, and soul - and are greater than you will ever be able to imagine.

Note: If you are wondering why this blog is now only appearing on alternate days (excluding Sat/Sun), it is because I also post on my other blog on the others days. That other blog is Rewiring the Soul so named for my first book. Click here to visit the blog and/or to sign up for the feed.
